A New School Year

September.
It still feels like summer, and it is difficult to get out of bed. Despite this, we end up at school ready to begin another year of exploration and learning. September is a month of conflicting emotions. We yearn for the carefree days of summer, but on one hand we get excited about the new things we will learn in the coming months at school.

I came across an article entitled "Ten skills every student should learn". I thought this would be a good place to begin the year.

What are the skills you, as students, think you should be learning? What do your parents think?

Let me know by leaving a comment. I will post the ten skills and offer my thoughts on them in the coming weeks.

I look forward to reading your thoughts.

  1. I think the number #1 skill we should be learning more in school is how to live a healthy happy lifestyle; because if your not healthy your not happy. And when I mean healthy I'm not only talking about physically I'm also talking about mentally. What I mean with physically healthy is to eat well, learn how to cook healthy foods, not to take drugs, and to learn how to exercise your body. When I talk about being mentally healthy I mean being able to love yourself and to know how to communicate with people around you and knowing how to manage the stress of life. You could be the richest person on earth and have billions and billions of dollars but when it comes right down to it, if your not healthy and happy that money won't do you any good.

  2. Hello everyone! One of the things I think students should learn is to respect others and use manners so you won't have that much bad relationship with other people. People should also learn to learn from mistakes so you won't make such a big deal out of it and correct it instead. Another thing is that students should learn to do acadamics so you could be smart. A fourth thing students should learn is to read because reading can help you with almost all academics and so on. Thank you for reading my blog. Chris Lam7H

  3. I think what the number 1 skill that we should be learning more in the school year in my opinion is about orgazation. Organization plays one of the most important role in our lives. If we're not organized then we need help, because you can't do much things without being organized.Like say you have a test on Monday and you also have dance, swumming, and baseball on Monday then how can you study???? Well it's simple you plan ahead you organized when and where you are going to study and the next thing you know is that you know your ready for the test. It doesn't matter how you study, you just need to know when you have time and when should you do it. It's very simple just plan ahead and be organized.!!! And that's why I thing that's the number 1 skill that students need to know about.

  5. Hey mr gould I think the most important skill we should learn this year is our social skills because were getting older and there will come times where someone is doing something that you find very annoying and you get so angry you just want to shout but if you have good enough social skills you should be able to resist the temptation to scream and start a fight

  6. I Think The Number 1# skill of having a successful school year is following the seven habits :) because the seven habits is the whole package it teaches you how to treat your peers, how to take care of yourself, and of course how to have a successful school year.

  7. Mr. Gould:
I think that the most important skill we should learn is how to communicate and how to interact socially with each other. It should be easy right? After all, our mothers first taught us how to communicate.
Also, as we become more and more obsessed and depend on online social networks, we become less able and start to lose our ability to communicate and interact with each other. One of the things that makes us different from other animals is our special ability to communicate with each other. REMEMBER: The key to any good relationship is good communication.
Also, sometimes the smartest people won't come out of university with a job. Why? Because they don't have any social skills to impress their job interviewers. Alas, their professors would've given them good advice on how to get the job that they wanted IF they'd asked, but since they don't have good communication skills, they are without a job.
Finally, there is the autistic group. People with autism can't communicate and interact with other people as well, therefore there is another reason why we should be learning how to interact with each other.
However, my dad thinks that the most important skill we should learn is how to be resourceful, know where to find the answer, how to learn the skill-that kind of thing.

  8. I believe that the number one most important thing that a student should learn is to have self confidence.
I believe this because if you don't have self confidence you will not accomplish your goals because you don't believe in yourself.
That is the number one important thing a student should learn.

  9. My number one is be who you want to be. This is an very important trait to learn and applies to many things. Being who you want to be is all about being independent, and resisting peer pressure.

School is tough. And it is important to find the right friends. People that accept you for who you are. Learning this trait also develops your courage, believing that it doesn't matter how much friends you have but the quality of friends.

Friends are real important because they change you. If you have druggie friends, you will become a druggie or if you have straight "A" students the chances are you will be having improved marks. Again, be who you actually are and how you want others to portray you. Not to be what others like just to have more friends.

Be invincible, unbreakable, be the Pyramids. No matter how much it has been hit and blown. It picks itself up and stands tall.

  10. I think the #1 skill we should be learning is how to set goals because without doing that we can't get anywhere in life, also we won't have a successful life. Almost everyone does set goals for themselves in the beginning of the year, but most people forget about it. So when I say to learn how to set goals, I also mean how to achieve and keep our goals. Its like getting your drivers permit, you want you license and you plan to get it before your 18 , but you never study for the test; consequently, you fail it. So you try again, but you still don't study so you fail once again. You try over and over and over again and each time you don't bother studying; in the end you give up and your already 19. If you took the time to study, there would be a higher chance of you passing the drivers ed on your first or second try.

  11. I think that the most important skill us students need to have is collaboration. Personally, I think there is nothing more important. Almost every thing you do in life will require you to work together and solve problems, whether it's your life troubles or even your math homework. If you try to do things yourself and ignore people who try to help you, you will have a very tough life and struggle at so many things. But if you work together, anything is poossible!

  13. It's Emily,

I think the most important thing that a successful student needs to learn is to read. Every subject in school involves reading. From a textbook, to reading a script, to reading mathematical equations, it just surrounds us. I can’t imagine learning without reading. Everything the teacher writes on the board, every worksheet that is handed out, needs to be read. So to be a successful student, how is not reading possible?

Reading is everywhere. You need to read signs to know that you won’t walk into a toxic area or something. Signs like “DANGER!” or “EXIT” could possibly save a person’s life.

Most of my vocabulary comes from reading books, so I can’t imagine what would happen to me if I didn’t know how to read. I started reading chapter books in kindergarten and once I started I couldn’t stop :) . Whenever I was bored I would just grab a book and read. It is much more educational for students than playing on the computer.

  15. In my opinion, organization is a very important skill to learn when it comes to being a student, and that means planning ahead, so I agree with Kelly. Planning is important to achieve goals and complete assignments on time.
But that is not all. Organization is crucial when it comes to work spaces. Let’s say you get to school and make your way to your locker. Your lock is stuck, you forget your combination, etc. You deal with all of those problems and finally get your locker open. Now you have another problem: Your pile of books, papers and a couple of other random items, have toppled over and fallen on the tile floor in front of you. Everyone around you has taken a step back from the horrid smell of last week’s strawberries that you forgot to bring home last Friday. You throw them in the trash and stuff your bag in your locker. As you unzip your backpack you realize that you have forgotten yet another thing: your agenda. You could write your homework on a scrap piece of paper, but it would get lost or crumpled at the bottom of your bag with all of your other rejected papers and unfinished homework assignments.
Your once perfect morning has been infested with the virus of chaos. If this is not what your mornings are usually like, then congratulations. If they are, then you may want to consider switching to organization. You can choose to be whoever you want to be, but I think that organization is one of the most important skills to have, and should be learned by students and others alike.

  16. Hi Mr. Gould. I think that the most important skill a student should learn is creative thinking, because every student should think outside the box so that new ideas can be created. Every discovery, invention, creation, etc. wouldn't have happened without creativity and imagination. Without creative thinking,I wouldn't be here typing this. There would be no TV's, iPods, cellphones or computers. If you don't have a creative mind, you are less likely to be successful than someone who does.

  17. Hi Mr.Gould. I think the most important skill a student should learn is to be trying your best at all times because every student deserves to get a feeling of satisfaction. When you work hard in school and you get good grades you get a great feel of happiness, no one would want to take a bad grade home and tell their parents but still if you worked hard and you still got a bad grade i would still feel little bit of happiness because i gave it my best and i could always learn from my mistakes. Another reason you should try your best is because if you do well in school, you get good grades and you take your education seriously, you wont have to worry about your future, getting a job...

  19. In my opinion, an important skill we should be learn is self-esteem, or confidence. I think this because I believe that in order to achieve your goals and be successful, you need to be confident. Confidence influences a lot of our actions. Without it, you could miss out on a lot of opportunities. Feeling self conscious can result in being afraid of harsh scrutiny. Receiving harsh scrutiny can make your self-esteem drop. You need to have confidence in yourself in order to succeed. For example - you are running for president. You don't win, and you're disappointed. Your confidence drops. You don't want to try again because you're afraid of losing again. If you had more confidence instead and ran for president again, you might've won! Win or lose the second time, but at least you had a better chance at winning by trying again than not at all. Therefore, I believe that the number one skill a student should learn is self-esteem and confidence.

  22. Hi
The first thing that I think that students should learn is self-confident. With self-confident we are able to have the strength to stand up for yourself and not be hurt about it. If we have self-confident then we would be able to know what we are good at, what we are bad at, and what we are ok at. We would feel good because we at least actually tried. If you do not have self-confident then we wont even know how we can do things and what we can do, either in the future or the present. Many people don't have self confident and that's one thing we need to change. So I think self-confident is what people should be learning!

  23. Personally, I believe the #1 skill that everyone should have is to be able to respect others and themselves. I say this because we are at school for 8 hours a day, for about 10 months. A lot of things can happen in-between those that time. Some could be wonderful, and others? Not so much. Many people get bullied, and harassed. Sometimes even into suicide. But if you really think about it, if the students can learn to respect one another, most of this wouldn't happen. Since we would be respecting one another's differences and opinions, there wouldn't be much space for bulling. And the suicide rates would go down. That is why i believe that the #1 skill that everyone should have is to respect each other.
